Who hasn't heard the phrase "there's not enough time in the day" or how about "I don't even have time to breathe"? Yes, it's true, we'd all love to amble through the day, mindfully eating our lunches and taking plenty of time to stop and smell the flowers but is it really possible? With plates piled high and plenty of obligations to meet, it's not easy for the average person to achieve a sense of balance in their life but it can be done.
Identify your relationship with time
To what degree are you able to slow down and truly savor your life? Or, perhaps you're moving too slowly and would like to accomplish more. An honest inventory of how we use our time allows for the opportunity to see the truth. Consider tracking your time, hour by hour, for one week. Here's a good example of a TIME INVENTORY. Print this one or use it to create your own.
It's easy to believe that there aren't enough minutes in the day but there's a good chance you'll find something that can be dropped, delegated, added or delayed. Free space can be created. Examine your behaviors and let the results guide you. Once the week of time tracking is over consider the following:
- How do you spend your time?
- Do you spend your time in a way that allows your values to create your path or you off track?
- Are you nourished or obligated?
- Is there room for adjustment or are you locked in?
- What would you be doing if you did have more time?
As you move through the exercise, instant change will occur because you are now more aware. Your relationship with time is now on paper. You can look at it and begin to allow for shifts to take place. Begin to look for opportunities to reclaim your time and let go of obligations that don't contribute to your well being. Consider adding new tasks or commitments if you'd like to be doing more for others. Find the balance between taking care of yourself and helping others.
I'd love to hear from you! Let me know how your time inventory exploration is going and take care.Julie
